Concept

The disc should always be alive. When you catch the disc, it should either:

  • Move, or
  • Threaten to move

Standing still and waiting for a perfect option allows defenders to:

  • Recover position
  • Set an effective force
  • Communicate and organise

As soon as a defender recovers and applies a strong force, the priority becomes resetting the disc.

Keeping the tempo of disc movement up is primarily the responsibility of the Active Handler and the player that has just thrown it to them. If there is an available throw downfield then great but the Active Handler should be resetting before the tempo can drop.

Reason

Disc movement creates defensive movement.
Defensive movement creates throwing windows.

The longer the disc stays still, the easier the defence’s job becomes.
Fast decisions force defenders to react instead of control.

We use a 2-second decision window to keep the offence proactive and flowing.

Decision Rules

If you are moving toward the disc or into the backfield:

  • Return the disc to the previous thrower in motion
  • The goal is to give the disc back better than you received it

If you are moving away from the disc:

  • Look immediately for a leading pass
  • Preferred options:
  • If defensive pressure arrives → dump or swing immediately

Player Rules

  • Catch ready to throw
  • Do not hold the disc waiting for cuts to develop
  • If the force is set, reset without hesitation

Mental Model

The disc is a hot object.
If you stop moving it, the defence cools the play down.
