Expansive is the second of the two schemes that runs through our play style. Where Small Ball - Dribbling is the default, Expansive is the punishment — used when the defence sits under and stops respecting handler movement.

Focus

Attacking the endzone with long, aggressive passes and fewer total throws to reduce interception risk. Only look at deep shots when the trigger conditions are met.

This is triggered when defenders poach lanes, sit under, or stop respecting handler movement.

When to Trigger

When defenders:

  • Sit under (over-committing to denying continuation throws)
  • Poach lanes
  • Stop respecting handler movement
  • And the disc is in motion forwards

The deep look is the natural payoff after a Swing or a clean leading pass into the Power Position Channel — the defender they thought they could leave free has just become the receiver.

The "S-Cut" ISO

  1. The Iso player cuts hard under to draw their defender.
  2. If they don't get the disc, they immediately "S-cut" (turn and sprint deep) into the vacated space.
  3. The Side Stack players must hold their position to keep the deep lane clear — see Clear the Middle - Quick Ref.
  4. Inactive players keep defenders engaged to reduce poaching.

The S-cut is one of the cleanest entries into the Power Position Channel for a downfield cutter — the defender is recovering from one direction; the cutter is striding into the opposite one.

The Diagonal Stake

  • Look for the far-side deep.
  • When the disc is on the left sideline, the player at the back-right of the side stack cuts diagonally across the pitch.
  • Why: this is the hardest cut for a defender to track in a spread system.

The Diagonal Stake works best off a Swing — the swing pulls the defence laterally; the stake attacks the space the defence has just vacated downfield.
