From the Endzone Line

Overview

A half-pitch drill starting from a live, unpredictable disc entry that forces both offence and defence to organise instantly.
All players begin at the back of the endzone, and a coach initiates play by throwing the disc into space. The attacking side must recognise spacing, protect the middle, and score quickly, while the defence adapts on the fly.

Aims

  • Train fast transition offence from static starts
  • Reinforce immediate disc movement
  • Encourage purposeful use and protection of the middle lane
  • Develop defensive communication and role assignment

Targeted Core Skills

  • Transition organisation
  • Reset structure
  • Give-and-go movement
  • Breakside initiation
  • Defensive switching and communication
  • Decision-making under time pressure

Setup

  • All players (offence and defence) line up along the back of the endzone
  • Coach stands on the sideline with a disc
  • Playing area is half a pitch, attacking one endzone
  • Coach throws the disc into a random area of the half

Execution

  1. On the coach’s throw:
    • All players sprint into the field
  2. The first offensive player to the disc becomes the thrower.
  3. Offence must:
    • Organise quickly
    • Establish a usable middle
    • Move the disc as soon as possible
  4. Defence must:
    • Match up dynamically
    • Communicate roles
    • Apply immediate pressure
  5. Play continues until:
    • A score
    • A turnover
  6. Reset quickly for the next rep.

Emphasis / Coaching Focus

Offence

  • Disc must move immediately — no surveying
  • Identify and protect the middle early
  • First look after an under is continuation or give-back
  • Clear decisively if you are not the next action

Defence

  • Communicate matchups early
  • Close easy lanes first
  • Recover quickly after switches
  • Prevent free access to the middle

Common Mistakes

  • Players jogging off the line
  • Disc held while offence “sets up”
  • Waiting for the force to arrive
  • Multiple players drifting into the same space
  • Defence ball-watching instead of communicating
  • No clear reset option

Developments

Development 1 – Switch Immediately

Objective: Stay aware, Defence adapt and make space, offence stay switched on and prepared to make a play.

  • After a turnover the defence immediately becomes offence, scoring in the same endzone.

Development 2 – Directional Entry

Objective: Train recognition from different entry angles.

  • Coach alternates throws:
    • Open side
    • Break side
    • Central space
  • Offence must adapt structure accordingly

Development 3 – Live Defence Advantage

Objective: Increase pressure.

  • Defence starts at the front of the endzone, offense at the back.
  • Offence must survive early pressure

Defensive Variations

  • 1 Defender selected as the force is already in position.
  • Allow switching for first 5 seconds only
  • Poach allowed initially, then recover

Progressions / Regressions

Regression:

  • Pre-assign first thrower
  • Slower disc entry
  • No stall count

Progression:

  • Full live stall count
  • Bonus for break-side scores
  • Immediate transition on turnover

Coaching Notes

  • This drill exposes game IQ very quickly
  • Don’t over-coach — let players solve problems
  • Reset quickly to maximise reps
  • Ideal drill for trials and late-session pressure work
