Definition
A reset is a throw that does not advance the disc — usually backward or sideways to a Dump Handler or Secondary Handler. Its purpose is to keep the disc alive, refresh the Stall Count, and force the defence to re-shape against a new disc position.
In Context
The reset is one of the most misunderstood throws in ultimate. New players treat it as a failure — "I had to reset" — but in our system the reset is the correct play whenever no continuation is on inside the 2 Second Window. Resetting at stall 2 is winning. Resetting at stall 6 is panicking.
A good reset is itself a setup. The disc moves backward, the new thrower has the entire downfield picture in front of them, and the defence — having just defended one shape — now has to defend a new one. Used well, a reset is the trigger for a Swing, a deep look, or another Give-and-Go.
The reset is also where the Active Handler connects with the Dump Handler and Secondary Handler — the structured handler movement we use whenever the disc is in trouble. See Small Ball - Dribbling for the off-line reset pattern.
