Sliding is the marking technique of following the thrower's pivots and intent to keep the force to a consistent side. Rather than being stationary, the marker slides laterally in front of the thrower, ensuring the force remains effective regardless of how the thrower moves.

A thrower will use pivots and fakes to try to shift the mark and open up a previously closed throwing lane. Sliding neutralises this by moving with the thrower rather than reacting to each fake.
A defender who is not sliding will find their force broken by simple pivots. A defender who slides well makes the force feel immovable, which forces the offence to work harder to find their windows.
